Activists staged Tuesday night`s march through downtown Oakland in response to a violent police raid on the Occupy Oakland encampment and what force they used to try and settle the marchers. They use tear gas and rubber projectiles in order to keep the violence at a minimum and not cause any lethal damage. One of the policemen shot a projectile at an Iraq war veteran, although rubber bullets and tear gas are thought to not cause much harm the blow that the veteran took was quite lethal. He is now at the hospital in stable but critical condition, with a fractured skull, and brain swelling. This is an interesting story to know about because it first informs you of what force they`re using to deal with these situations. Its timeliness is still relatively new since it was posted on October 26th, it still refers to recent situations that have happened in the past month and probably in possible future articles regarding the situation. This happened in California so it probably would not effect us as a state but when events such as these occur it effects the nation. Although the victim of this accident was not well known he is still a war veteran and that is definitely something that Americans are sensitive about. When people hear about these kinds of things they are already automatically saddened and offended, but when it involves a veteran or someone who served in the military it becomes more of an offense because of their occupation and what they stand for. Stories like this will probably not be remembered very long, but it will have an impact of future events. The source is from from aol.com news and most people still rely on aol for current events. I think that although this article is fair on one side and may make it seem like what the officers did was wrong, they did not get the police side of this where they only had to do their jobs and what they could do to prevent further damage to the city. " RESPOND EXAMPLE: "Iʻm glad to see someone covered this story and the good news is Scott Olsen "was awake and lucid..been upgraded from critical to fair condition overnight." according to USA, http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Latest-News-Wires/2011/1028/Occupy-Oakland-As-injured-Iraq-vet-recovers-occupiers-promise-to-shut-the-city-down This is an important observation you made: "When people hear about these kinds of things they are already automatically saddened and offended, but when it involves a veteran or someone who served in the military it becomes more of an offense because of their occupation and what they stand for." To me, when the Veterans stand up for things like this it gives me renewed faith in humanity. There are a lot of enlistees that go to wars for the paycheck and other not so honorable reasons but when they put their money where their mouth is afterwards, it says a lot about integrity what they were fighting for. From these last 10 years there have been a few brave soldiers putting their careers on the line to speak out. I believe when they do this their voices have more weight than the average citizen. Thank you for choosing Scott Olsen as the focus of your assignment. " ---------------------------------- Here are 2 articles that I want you to response : 1. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/26/iraq-vet-oakland-police-tear-gas_n_1033159 This article is about the Occupy Oakland March that happened on October 26, 2011. " 2. " The one news from this past week that caught my attention was the story about the 2 year-old Chinese girl named Wang Yue, who got hit by two vans (both hit and run) that died. While the mother was away the 2 years old toddler got hit and run by a van, then another van came and hit and run away, but while she was left bleeding on the floor, 18 pedestrians and cyclists passed by but no one called for help. Finally one Chinese lady came by and moved the girl to the side of the street and called for help, but with in that 10 minutes there was 18 people who saw her but did nothing about it, after a week of the girl in coma she passed away. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2011/10/nanjing-judge-blamed-for-apathy-in-toddlers-hit-and-run/ I think this news is so sad to hear because it is human nature to help others, and seeing 18 people pass by a little girl laying on the ground covered in blood is hard to find anywhere in this world. If this incident happened anywhere else but china, for example America, maybe the little girl Wang Yue could have lived. And this is also a reminder to everyone in this world that us humans are here to help each other not to leave others behind, especially if they are in life danger. This news was reported very accurately and fairly with pictures, information and also a video of what exactly happened. It is very relevant and complete and has a very deep meaning to this news. That same day when Wang Yue was laying on the ground for 10 minutes, there was a brave woman who dove into the famous lake in china while others looked up on. But later on the news reporters found out the woman who dove in the lake was a American tourist who was just visiting. This really shows how China doesn`t have much morals and that we all should learn from this news and Wang Yue`s death, we should always help others. "
