People can multitask and view many pieces of information and at a faster rate. I do support going to your local library for the young and old. The example from the social issues textbook sidebar about students cutting and pasting whole papers is a grave misuse of the Internet. But I do not think that the fact that happens is enough to support the idea that the Internet has fundamentally changed the way we think. We still work to process information and it is best to use both the library and Internet for sources. If you take your time reading your sources you will be able to digest the information. Using both is best for the development of your mind, thought process, and your research paper. The Internet has not yet become the end all source for all information. In fact our text quotes "Some students are amazed to discover that information specialists report that only about fifteen percent of all information can be found online." As I student I was not amazed by this statistic but I don"t really know how this information was pooled. There is one Positive effect to the Internet i think but it has to do with the Internet being portable and on the go. Portable Internet has made people more curious because you can attempt to answer and question at anytime and this luxury has made people more curious. The internet may of also changed the way we think with its ability for navigation G.P.S. applications. There are many example on the internet of G.P.S. blamed car crashes. " Here is the example of how to respond to the article above: "The things you mention are something to consider with respect to our thinking processes; maybe the internet use isnʻt so bad as you point out we multi-task now and are probably cramming even more information into our heads. It is an interesting topic though. And although more may be going in, I wonder if we are carving out new nooks and crannies in our brains that werenʻt there before. I was surprised that only 15% of all information can be found online. Sure seems like a lot more. " ---------------------------------- Here are 2 articles that I want you to response : 1: "Internet has changed the way we think. People do not need to think deeply because there are already many answers and information on the internet. If people need to solve something, people can find answer or solutions on the internet. For example, when students research something for assignments, some students may just gather the information to make conclusions. According to the text book, “More common today is the practice of lifting a few sentences, changing a word at the end, and passing off the result as an original thought.” Thus, students tend to just gather information as own idea instead of thinking deeply. In BBC NEWS: Changing the way we think, Bill Thompson also reported that “ … the style of searching and exploration of links encouraged by search engines such as Google is changing the way heavy users think … .” (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7459182.stm June 17 2008) People who are heavy internet users more likely to be changed the way they think. Internet has also changed the way gather information. According to text book, “Back in the good old days, … if a professor assigned a term it meant students would spend a lot of time in the library … .” Thus, past days, college students researched about topics by book at library. Nowadays, most college students do academic research by using internet. They might gather basic information about the topic on the web sites at first. Then, they can research further to gather valid information by library web sites. Kapiolani Community College`s Lama library also has web site, and we can do academic research by that site. There are varieties of fields` academic journals on the web site, and we can easily access these journals anytime. In the eHow family: The Influence of the Internet on Education, Kenneth V. Oster said that “Internet usage opens the entire world of information and communication to students. Students can access libraries from any city of the world at any time day or night.” (http://www.ehow.com/about_6593610_influence-internet-education.html no published date) Thus, the way college students gathering information is changing. In conclusion, internet has impact on our lives. Internet is sometimes very useful for us because we can gather variety of information on the internet anytime. On the other hand, internet has risks that changes the way we think. We should know that internet has both positive and negative side to use it handily.
