Scenario 1:

You recently started working at Sharp Auto Parts Company, located in La Crosse, immediately after graduating from UWL. Your position with the company is Outside Salesperson, where your job is to visit current retailers throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota checking and maintaining inventory levels, as well as meeting with potential retail clients. Your duties mean you will be traveling most of the time visiting clients and only physically going to the office 1 day every two weeks. You will need to keep track of all your travel expenses (i.e. mileage, gas, hotel, meals, etc.) so you can be properly reimbursed.

You will need technology to help you perform your job. To scan, order, and track the company’s products you will be supplied with a Motorola MC3190 mobile computer/hand scanner that is tied to the company’s inventory system. However you will probably need a computer to file your reimbursement reports, time sheets, and travel logs as well as a mobile phone, separate from your personal phone, in order to communicate with clients and the office. The company has given you a budget of $3,500 for the purchase of the technology.

You are to write a memo to Anthony Gibbs, the sales manager, stating what technology you would like the company to purchase. You may pick whatever technology you want but you will need to justify the purchase.

Scenario 2:

You recently started working at Sharp Auto Parts Company, located in La Crosse, immediately after graduating from UWL. Your immediate boss, Anthony Gibbs, has a daughter Ellie, who will be attending Boston College in the fall. Both Anthony and his wife, Caitlyn, are nervous because Ellie will be 1,200 miles from family and friends. Anthony wants Ellie to have the best college experience possible, which means doing well in her classes, keeping in touch with family and friends, and active and positive social experiences. To help support this happening, he wants to get her a new computer and phone. Since he knew you recently graduated from college, he wanted your suggestion on what to get her.

Besides drawing on your own personal college experience, here is some personal information about Ellie. She is close with her mother and has never been away from home for more than a few days at a time in her entire life. Her two best friends, Mariah and Emily, will be attending UW Madison and The University of Texas at Austin respectively. She is an excellent student and will be double majoring in English and Film Studies at BC. She loves movies, music, books, and photography. She has never really been into sports or computer games. As a First Year, she will be living on campus in a standard double room.

You are to write a memo to Anthony concerning what technology (i.e. computer, phone and any apps or software) he should buy her. Anthony has a budget of $3,500 for technology. You need to justify any proposed purchase.
