Why are diarrheal diseases considered to be such a significant and ongoing global public health problem?
Reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) (2013) indicate that diarrheal disease has been a leading cause of death among children under the age of five, despite the fact that it is preventable and treatable. Additionally, diarrhea is also a major cause of malnutrition among this age group of children. Clean drinking water and proper sanitation and hygiene are considered critical in preventing diarrheal diseases. WHO (2013) states that most of the people who die from diarrheal related diseases, die because of severe dehydration and fluid loss. Additionally, malnourished kids are affected due to impaired immunity that makes them susceptible to illnesses such as adverse effects of diarrhea.
