Understanding Mental Health and Mental Distress

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

1. Critically appraise the evidence for the major models of mental health and mental distress, including the contribution of social, physical and development factors.
2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the presentation of mental disorder in specific groups.
3. Critically analyse the major models of intervention, relevant treatments and evidence of their effectiveness for service users, their families and carers.
4. Appraise critically the formal and informal resources potentially available to provide an acceptable alternative to admission to hospital.
5. Critically discuss the social and inclusive perspective on mental health and meeting mental health needs in working with service users, relatives, carers and other professionals.
6. Critically evaluate issues relating to discriminatory practice.
