General instructions The assignment consists of a w ritten report documenting your efforts to help a “client” initiate a physical activity behavioural change in the area of sport or exercise. Examples could be taking up exercise (again), increasing frequency &/or intensity of exercise / training, adhering to a sport injury rehabilitation programme, combining hard physical training w ith school, work or family commitments etc. In order to do this you must carry out an exercise consultation with a client. Your client may be a fellow student, friend or family member (not a member of the general public, client within an organisation you work for, or vulnerable person including under 18s). During the consultation you should: Assess their current physical activity level, health status and their current readiness to (stage of) change. Help them establish a realistic physical activity goal (use your knowledge of goal setting and current health recommendations). The goal should be something that w ill realistically fit into the life of the client, and it is expected that the client w ill make a genuine effort to achieve the objective.  Select appropriate behaviour change techniques (e.g. decision balance, contingency management, barrier identification and management etc.), to support them in achieving this goal over the following two weeks (use your knowledge of motivation and behaviour change theory and refer to primary source evidence to support your selection). As a basic minimum you should aim to adopt a communication style that is supportive and motivational in nature.  After two weeks contact your client again in order to assess the effectiveness of your strategy in relation to their physical activity goal.

Now reflect on your contribution in terms of an evaluation of the behaviour change strategy used and how motivational your communication style w as. Present this as a case study report. You need to audiotape the consultancy sessions and hand in the tape w ith the hard copy of your assignment. It is not necessary to hand in a transcription of the full consultation. However, as part of section (d) in your report, you need to provide: 1. A transcription of 2 interactions where you think you have shown a particularly helpful response, with an explanation of why you think your responses were helpful on these occasions (with appropriate reference to the literature). 2. A transcription of 2 interactions where you think your response was not so good or helpful, w ith an explanation of why you think this w as the case (with appropriate reference to the literature).
