Further notes on analysing written text (use these in addition to the lecture PowerPoint slides)

In this part of the assignment you are applying some of the criteria I have taught you to the analysis of a newspaper editorial. Editorials are short, they always take a stance on issues and they reflect the political tendencies of the newspaper or magazine. For this reason they provide good data for language analysis.

You will write your assignment in plain paragraphs and provide examples to illustrate your analysis. You might want to put your examples into italics. Write the text in a holistic way rather than dealing with each item point by point. You may use dot points and sub-headings to highlight your analysis if you wish. Use my model as a guide.

No extended references are required. This is a language analysis exercise not an essay. It is a massive field and you are not being asked to go out and do extended reading. This is an introductory course so do be selective in what you read and stick with the recommended reading for the course.

You should first analyse the editorial in terms of its Register (Field, Tenor and Mode.)

You should identify and analyse the aspects of Transitivity that you see in the editorial.

Things to look for: Participants, Mood, Modality, Processes, Personal Pronouns, Conjunctions, Nominalisation, Hedging. NB: They may not all be present in your text.

Answer the questions in the assignment task rubric (instructions) about how these grammatical choices position the reader and what they tell you about the position of the writer(s).
