Electrical Materials in Smartphone Technology
1.0 Introduction
The modern mobile phone has come a long way since Alexander Graham Bell made the first phone call in 1876. Indeed the telephone didn’t change much for many decades remaining principally a wired connection with an electromechanical microphone at one end, an electromechanical loudspeaker at the receiver and using mechanical switches for dialing – although tone dialing was introduced in the 1960’s indicating the adoption of electronics into telephony. It is in the last 20 years with the advent of mobile phones whereby radical changes to the phone have happened. The evolution of the ‘smartphone’ has been made possible by taking advantage of emerging technology – or even driving innovation to make the ‘smart phone’ not only possible but something that can be mass produced. The engineering challenge to be considered by this assignment is identify key technologies that are needed to make a smartphone.
2.0 Research Activities: ‘Smartphone Technology Topics’
As the course progresses various ‘smartphone technology topics’ will be identified that relate to lecture content. These topics are to be researched in relation to ‘smart phone’ technology. Sources of information need to be referenced that both explain how the ‘smartphone technology topic works (background theory) and to give examples of the technology (i.e. data sheets for typical components).
3. Formal Report
Your research is to be summarised in a Formal Report. Begin with an overview of the ‘smartphone technology topics’ and identify the 4 smart phone components you consider to be of most significance. Then outline the electrical properties of each of these component based the constituent material properties that make the smart phone possible. Provide an example of each the key components referring to a datasheet for a real product. Where appropriate include diagrams, adding an appropriate citation if taken from the literature. Summarise your report by discussing whether each of these components enabled the evolution of the smart phone – or was driven by smart phone developments.
The report should be in WORD or PDF using the ‘SIGCHI Paper Format (2016)’ publication format (available at: http://www.sigchi.org/publications/chipubform ) and no alteration of formatting by students (e.g. font size, line spacing) will be permitted. The report should be no more than 4 pages.
Any figures or tables must have a numbered caption and must be referred to in the Text – or they are not part of the report! The file should be named “000XXXXXX – ELEC1035 1617 Assignment” (where 000XXXXXX is your banner number).Your report is to be submitted via Turnitin (on the Portal/Moodle) which will check for plagiarism. (Advice on avoiding plagiarism can be found on the University website.)
