Eight weeks into the course, we have been exposed to several readings that comment on African American responses to Jim Crow and life in the Southern United States, on the debates between WEB Du Bois and BT Washington, Marcus Garvey and others, and on the roles played by African Americans in the segregated US armed forces and World War I.  We have also discussed the movements of African Americans out of the South via the chapter by Joanne Turner-Sadler.  This assignment requires you to reflect on those videos and sources (on D2L), and the discussions in class which followed the screenings, to write and submit online a three-page (reaction) paper.

Please select one of the questions under “Questions to consider” and write a short (three-page) (reaction) paper that answers the question and issues therein and, conforms to the guidelines provided in the D2L “Handy-Dandy Guide to Writing a Reaction Paper”.  This assignment is due by 11:59 pm on Saturday, December 5, 2015 to avoid late penalty. 

Questions to consider

 1.      Using Joanne Tuner-Sadler’s (2011) Chapter 7 or other sources available to you, write a short essay that explains why almost two million African Americans left the South in “The Great Northern Migration” at the turn of the 20^th century.  Discuss the reasons for and the nature of the migrations to the North, West, and Midwest.
