Child & Adolescent Mental Health Module Assignment David Macleod is eleven years old and currently lives with his mother Alice Macleod. David`s father Ian died in a motorbike accident when David was five years old. Alice is a nurse but was diagnosed with Multiple sclerosis (MS) two year years ago and not been well enough to work since then. They live in a semi-detached house with three bedrooms in a town a few miles from Edinburgh. David attends his local primary school and has just started P7. Alice finds it hard, at times, to look after David and care for the house and garden. David is her main carer and has taken responsibility for doing jobs around the house. Alice has struggled with depression since her husband`s death and finds it hard to admit how hard she is finding life. Alice does not want to ask for help from outside agencies and this puts David under quite a lot of stress. He is often very tired at school and gets into trouble for not handing his homework in on time. The school are not aware of the pressure that David is under at home. David finds it hard to make friends at school, particularly as he is unable to meet up with them after school and at weekends due to his home situation.

Heather Ferguson is also in P7 and is in David’s class at school. Heather lives with her mother and father, Harry and Elizabeth Ferguson a few streets away from David. Heather is a popular girl at school and has lots of friends in the class. Heather has a baby brother Charlie who is 6 months old. Her mother is currently on maternity leave from her job as receptionist in the local GP surgery. Heather’s father works in a bank and has just been offered promotion which he is very pleased about. However, the promotion will mean the family relocating to Aberdeen. Heather’s parents have been discussing this for a while and are excited about the possibility of the move. They decided not to tell Heather until the move was definite. Heather is very upset about leaving her school and friends and has taken the news very badly. Harry and Elizabeth are sympathetic and are trying to reassure Heather that there are lots of exciting things to do in Aberdeen. They are going to visit Heather’s new school next week and look at possible houses to buy in the area. Heather is not looking forward to the visit and feels very resentful to her father for getting his new job. The family will be moving during the Christmas holidays and Heather will be starting her new school in January. Elizabeth is particularly anxious as she can see the affect that the impending move is having on Heather and how she has become moody and withdrawn at home.
