I have to respond two of my fellow students` papers. -I`m gonna post some example how to respond to a article below (see below) -The comments need not be long (100 words at least), you have something to say beyond, "I agree" or "I disagree." -I`m looking for quality of thought. Please be respectful and constructive and avoid personal comments about the writer. Feel free to comment on comments if you wish. If you have any questions, please send me message. Here is the example for article and response: article: "1. Will theater, DVD, and download prices for films go up, down, or stay the same? According to our textbook, “DVD sales still make most of the income for the film industry, but revenues declined for the first time every from 2006 to 2007 and continued to decline again in 2008”. To compensate for the declining revenues, the prices will have to go up to some degree. I don`t buy DVDs or go to the theatre very often, but I have experienced price increases from Netflix in rentals of both DVDs and downloaded movies. 2. Will streaming video movies on the Internet continue to grow or will bandwidth/net traffic issues or other issues get in the way? I predict that streaming movies on the internet will continue to grow. One reason is that pricing is cheaper than going to a theatre. But the main reason for the popularity is the instant gratification and convenience of watching it in your own home whenever you want to. With the increase in portable devices such as the ipad, it`s possible to watch movies anywhere as long as you have an internet connection. Although I have had some problems with bandwidth and network connections during prime-time hours, I think the technology will continue to improve and solve these issues. 3. Will the increasing popularity of personal videography and services such as YouTube affect the commercial motion picture industry? The textbook states that “given the nature of film production, user-generated content is not yet a significant factor in the movie industry”. I still tend to agree with this statement. Even though YouTube was founded only six years ago, its success is phenomenal. With almost all laptop computers having a web camera, submitting videos is easy enough for anyone. (I`ve never submitted anything to YouTube, but I really do enjoy watching videos.) The content is mostly limited to people wanting their fifteen minutes of fame. It`s possible that services like YouTube might evolve to the point where they can handle higher quality and longer videos. But I don`t see it becoming a threat to the commercial motion picture industry, at least in the near future. Aside from the technical limitations, I think there would be many problems with copyright and financial issues." Respond 1: "Great answers!! I don`t buy DVDs much nor watch movies in the theaters too, I`d rather watch it on netflix or free downloading movies online because its so much more easier. I also agree that streaming movies on the internet will continue. Everything online is so much more faster and convenient. I also agree to your third question, youtube is very popular and easy for everybody to upload videos. " Respond 2: "I like the way you have presented your reasons for the 3 questions you chose. It is laid out very simply and common sense fashion forming logical conclusions. Especially regarding YouTubeʻs potential to affect the motion picture industry, your reasoning is sound and I agree. I hadnʻt been able to wrap my mind around this question cause I felt it just too speculative but you have summed it up well and I am reassured that the motion picture industry wonʻt bite the dust because I think you are right." Here are the 2 article that I chose to respond 1. "• Will film piracy persist or will the industry find a way to curtail theft? Film piracy much like other forms of entertainment piracy will persist no matter what due to the creation of the internet and constantly evolving technology. The internet allows us to share things around the world almost instantly with very low restrictions and what goes up stays up in some way shape or form. As I have said before when it comes to piracy when one side gains new technology at some point so will the opposing side. These two things guarantee the continued existence of piracy. Not to mention we have seen the entertainment industry try to crackdown on piracy before they managed to trace a download all the back to the original server that held the contents. The problem is that it took so much time and manpower to follow it back to its original source yet it was only one distributor even though there are countless others. Not to mention some people who download from the original often become distributers themselves whether it be online or copying it onto a drive for friends. • Will streaming video movies on the Internet continue to grow or will bandwidth/net traffic issues or other issues get in the way? Streaming video movies on the internet will definitely continue to grow in popularity. This can be seen in the success of businesses such as Netflix and Hulu(Hulu+). The other driving force behind the popularity of streaming video movies is piracy. Though downloading these movies will usually ensure better quality they also take longer and usually have questionable sources that can lead to viruses. Streaming is faster as you can watch the movie as long as your bandwidth can support the stream however these sites usually have questionable hosts and can also lead to viruses. Also the limiting of bandwidth may stop some people but the idea of "free" entertainment is quite a strong motivator so it won`t stop everyone. • Will the increasing popularity of personal videography and services such as YouTube affect the commercial motion picture industry? Honestly when it comes to the increasing popularity of personal videography and its effects on motion picture industry it can only really help. It can be a source of ideas for movies and even a place to find new talent like we`ve seen with the music industry such as Justin Bieber(I use him as an example of helping the industry make more money NOT as one of making it grow in terms of quality). An example of a YouTube series influencing the creation of a movie would be The LXD: The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers I would highly recommend this movie to anyone even if you are not that into dancing." 2. Response to an article(Student`s name)(Institutional Affiliation)Will film piracy persist or will the industry find a way to curtail theft?ResponseI like your answer and I have the same opinion about piracy in the film industry. Due to the advance in technology, I also feel it will be hard to do away with piracy because individuals are able to duplicate DVDs even when they are at their homes or in their offices. The efforts of the government to curtail piracy have been turned fruitless and the ones who are being affected are the original artists as they...
