The aims of this module are to enable students to:

■ understand the principles of research design and strategy used in criminological and criminal justice research, including an understanding of how to define and formulate researchable problems

■ critically assess the methodologies and methods underpinning criminological and criminal justice research and evaluations

■ enhance students` ability to evaluate and consider published research.

■ think critically about the uses of research on crime and criminal justice and the social, political, cultural and institutional contexts in which it takes place

By the end of this programme students will be able to demonstrate their capability to:

■ critically understand research and evaluation methods

■ define and formulate a research problem and devise an appropriate methodological strategy

■ understand and apply their knowledge to specific instances of criminal justice research
