Types of Networks
There are various different types of computers existing today and they can be characterized by size, as well as their function. A network size can be expressed in terms of the geographic area it occupies, as well as the number of computers attached to it. They range from those that cover a few devices within a room to those with millions of devices globally. Ultimately, there are essentially two common types of networks, that is the Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN). A local area network generally covers a small area such as one floor, office or building. A wide area network, on the other hand, covers a large geographical area, and are often made up of several LANs. Examples include a network between two or more buildings, a network of bank cash dispensers or the internet.
Additionally, other network types include Personal Area Network (PAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), Storage Area Network (SAN), Enterprise Private Network (EPN) and Vitual Private Network (VPN). PAN and MAN are characterized by size while SAN, EPN and VPN are characterized by their key function.
Personal Area Network
This network type refers to a computer network organized around an individual within a single building such as a home office or small office. It may include one or more computers, peripheral devices, smartphones, video game consoles alongside other personal entertainment devices.
Local Area Network
This network type refers to a computer network consisting of two computers, and can also accommodate hundreds of computers and other devices. Although a LAN relies on wired setups for enhanced speed and security, wireless connections can in addition be part of a LAN. It is characterized by highspeed connectivity at relatively low cost.
Metropolitan Area Network
This network type refers to a computer network spanning across cities, college campus or a similar geographical area. It is larger than LAN, which is classically restricted to a building or a single site. MANs are often developed from attempts to interconnect several LANs to form a superior network.
A wide area network, on the other hand, refers to a computer network organized and that occupies a larger geographical area, such as a country or an entire region/continent. The Internet is a WAN example.
This network types, as the name suggests, refers to networks owned and controled by an organization. These networks (EPN & VPN) are used independent of the public network (internet) to connect to multiple sites controlled by the same organizations. They are particularly common in sectors where security is of the highest concern. For instace, several health facilities have established their own network between multiple sites to have total control over the confidentiality of patient medical records
