The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recommended parents not to use teething tablets containing belladonna on babies. Belladonna is a toxic substance extracted from a deadly nightshade plant (Scutti, 2017). The food and drug administration found that some products had higher levels of belladonna exceeding the amount prescribed on the label. Although, the teething products would stop teething pains to the babies the side effects of the drugs were not worth putting the kids` health at risk (Scutti, 2017). The most side effect of using products with belladonna component was inhabitation of the nervous system, which leads to the following symptoms; dilated pupils, fast heartbeat, drying mouth, blurred vision, fever, red dry skin, inability to urinate or sweat, hallucinations, seizures, coma and finally death. Hence, American Academy of Pediatrics offered safe alternatives solutions, which are; use of approved medications by FDA such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, rubbing of the baby`s gum, teething ring or a change in the baby`s food (Scutti, 2017).
