If you are already familiar with the play, note how closely the production follows the original script: Has anything been cut or added? Has the director taken liberties in casting the characters? Is the setting different from the original play? Consider the costume choices. Pay attention to the set and the props. Has the director chosen to be more minimal in these areas? Do you find anything distracting about this performance? Does the music go well with the play? Why have any of these choices been made? Consider whether or not you would recommend this play to a friend. Jot down a few notes at intermission and after the play. While analyzing the different aspects of the performance, focus on at least three different areas of the production the appeal to you most. Choose from the following: script, acting, casting, lighting, set design, costume design, music/sound design, makeup, props. Organize your review accordingly. The introduction should include the following: the title of the play, the name of the playwright, and any pertinent historical information regarding the author. Include the place and date of the production you attended, and the name of the production company. The thesis of your review should include a general impression of the relative success or failure of the production, based on what you actually saw and on your initial impression of how the play should have been performed.
