Scenario

You have been appointed by Kan Bank to plan and create a prototype for their new online banking application. The bank has traditionally traded in small remote villages with a banking van that arrives generally on a weekly basis depending on the weather. However customers are now looking to do more banking online and they need more that the current limited website, which allows them to login and view their accounts. The Bank requires a mobile application designed and created to allow customers to login securely, transfer money between accounts, pay bills, and check standing orders and direct debits on the account. The Bank currently uses different colours of blue for the house style but needs a consistent style throughout all the pages that are designed. Your task is to plan and create a prototype interface for this mobile application utilising HCI principles.

Activity 1

In preparation for a meeting with senior staff at the Bank produce a presentation with associated support materials which:

  • evaluates the principles of HCI.
  • critiques different online/mobile online banking applications using the principles of HCI.
  • evaluates how effectively users can interact with the different applications

LO1 Assessment criteria: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3

Activity 2

Following the meeting you have been asked to plan an interface for the specified application. Based on the critique of the interface designs in Activity 1, produce design plans, including paper-mock ups showing the design of the online banking application in line with HCI principles. Justify the planned use of HCI principles and techniques against industry standards.

LO2 Assessment criteria: 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

Activity 3

Kan Bank has accepted your interface designs and the manager has asked you to create a prototype of the interface for the online banking application.

Once your prototype is complete, carry out testing of the application using HCI principles. Apply different tests to ensure that the full user experience has been critiqued and gather feedback. Revise the prototype based on this feedback.

LO2 Assessment criteria: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3

Guidelines for assessors

The assignments submitted by learners must achieve the learning outcomes and meet the standards specified by the assessment criteria for the unit. The suggested evidence below is how learners can demonstrate that they have met the required standard.

Suggested evidence

1

LO1

AC 1.1, 1.2, 1.3

The learner needs to demonstrate understanding of the principles of HCI using the given scenario. The learner needs to produce a presentation and associated materials which are appropriate for the intended audience.

The learner is not required to give the presentation. The materials must ensure that the learner has provided a comprehensive evaluation of HIC principles/laws. Using this evaluation the learner should carry out research into a number of existing online banking applications and critique the interfaces. Screen shots to support the critique would be useful and they can also be used as part of Activities 2 and 3.

The materials for the presentation will show balanced evaluations of the user interaction and experience with a number of online banking applications. This information should be used during Activity 2.

2

LO2

AC 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

The learner will produce design plans and paper mocks up of the interface for the online banking application. The learner will demonstrate through the designs, the application of user interface design techniques and will produce a justification of HCI principles and techniques chosen to meet industry standards.

The learner will link the principles and techniques to Storyboards, showing the user interface. The Storyboards will also include navigation screens showing how the user will move between the different screens. The content for each individual screen should also be included.

3

LO3

AC3.1, 3.2, 3.3

The learner will use application software to create their prototype online banking application. The learner will base this on the design plans from Activity 2. Once the application has been completed, the learner must carry out a number of tests to ensure that the application complies with HCI principles and good practice. In completing this task the learner should use the work completed in Activity 1.

The learner will need to test both the visual and functional components of the prototype along with navigation, structure and layout. There will be a critique of the user experience of the interface and this must be based on feedback obtained from users. The revisions made should be based on the results of the testing, including the feedback. Screen shots showing the revisions carried out will be required (alternatively screen recording software could be used to show the revisions that have been carried out).
