General Psychology: Assessments

This module will be assessed in two ways:

Coursework essay (8 pages, 50%): Choose any area of interest and identify a scientific research paper containing research evidence together with associated media reports (ie any secondary source).  Then provide a detailed critical analysis of the research paper (80%) and a further analysis of the ways in which the research has been presented by the media (20%).   The critical analysis should address what evidence is there (ie methods, measurement, coherence, refutation, theory etc) and how the evidence is presented (ie strategies of persuasion etc).

The markers are looking for thorough, in depth, detailed and nuanced critical thinking.  An excellent essay will draw upon many aspects of the critical tool kit and illustrate an in depth understanding BOTH of what constitutes evidence (and whether it is good evidence) and how the presentation of this evidence can influence whether or not it is persuasive.

Below are the marking guidelines and criteria that will be used to mark your essay and exam.  You will receive the completed criteria after the essay has been marked which should help you to develop your critical thinking skills further for the exam.  Please note that each check box may not be relevant to every essay.  So don’t just aim for a complete set of ticks just for the sake of it!
