Teaching the Muscular System to Students
Teaching the Muscular System to Students
INSTRUCTIONAL PROBLEM
Analysis:
Students of UWI Open Campus enrolled in a Beginner’s Massage Course do not know the workings of the muscular system, as they have not had prior knowledge of anatomy but at the end of the course, they will be able to name most of the muscles of the human body and have a working knowledge of the functions of the muscles and muscular system.
CONTEXT ANALYSIS
Learners:
General Characteristics:
- Gender – Both male and female are enrolled in the course. 10 females and 5 males.
- Age – Ranging from 20 to 50 years old.
- Education – All students have up to a secondary level education minimum.
- Work experience – All students have worked in varying fields but none that involved anatomy knowledge. Work experience will give them a basis on how to behave with others of different ages, as opposed to being of only school-aged whereby they are with peers of only their age.
- Ethnicity & Religious Background – Not relevant to the problem but all students are from mixed ethnic backgrounds and religions.
Entry Competencies:
The only pre-requisite for the course is a secondary school education and have working knowledge of a computer. This pre-requisite was met by all students.
They must be able to:
- Use a computer to access muscle games, videos and get notes.
- Understand English with reading, written and speaking skills.
- Students must be 4’ 5”.
Although the course is open to everyone, it has a height minimum of 4 feet 5 inches, as the massage beds cannot adjust to make anyone shorter comfortable and stave off physical injury. Students must also have access to a computer for their notes and have the ability to access information that will be on Schoology.com, a Learning Management System. Obviously, the class is run in English only, so English must be spoken, written and read well.
- Schoology.com will also be discussed, to ensure students have the code with which to enter the course online and understand how to use it.
- They will be advised that informal assessments will be done in class in the form of the instructor asking questions in subsequent classes.
This course will be a blended course, so students would have been in a face-to-face class three (3) times before the three (3) online ones, then have face-to-face again, as it is a course that requires some practical, face-to-face interactions.
Therefore, the following are how the three (3) online classes will be planned.
