During the early 1960s, the book`s main characters are introduced: Odenigbo, who frequently entertained intellectuals in order to discuss the political turmoil that was ongoing in Nigeria;Ugwu, a 13 year old boy from the village who moved in with Odenigbo in order to work as his house servant. Life changed for UgwuasOlanna,Odenigbo`s girlfriend, moved in with them. Olanna had a twin sister, called Kainene. Her lover was Richard,an Englishman who had come to Nigeriato study the arts.
